BOLY 2018 prep. Legends of the Old West, Largo

With Bring out your lead only 16 days away (and counting) I decided to blog my preperation so far.

I posted on the Oldhammer forum about hosting a game but as I'm not one of the 'big hitters' I did not really expect a response. So imagine my surprise when several people showed an interest!!

With that in mind I decided to construct Largo just to see where I was. . . . .

It's time to . . . .

So the miniatures have started pouring in for my Beastman army for Riotville LIVE! 2018 and despite the slow start to the year hobby wise it is time to put my nose to the grind stone!

First up is my 'Wild West' saloon from TT scenic which has been re-finished as it just looked pants next to the 4ground bits!

4ground: A&D Hardware store kit, completed.

With all the family going loopy over 'Strictly come dancing' it was decided we would have a little gathering for the final last Saturday.

By SIGMAR it flies!!!!!! Fozzriks flying fastness.

With the conclusion of the Blood in the Badlands campaign happening this Sunday I figured we needed something worth fighting over!

So here we are, Fozzriks flying fastness.

Fozzrik's Gate house. Blood in the Badlands.

By Sigmar!! It FLIES!!!!!!!

Still giggly and silly from the wonders of BOYL 2017 and knowing Geheimnisnacht is due this weekend in the Badlands I wanted to create something a bit special for the game.

And now for something completely different!! Legends of the Old West!!

So here is the (sort of) big TA - DAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

With the conclusion of the 'Shortshank redemption', Mordheim campaign with my brother, we decided we needed a small diversion before we headed into the west of Mordhiem with our new warbands.

With all of Kris' warband named after Wild West characters I had to show him this (LINK).

And that was that!

Then I got into a conversation with 2Key at the Creative biscuit last Thursday and he was in too.

So that REALLY was that!

So here for your viewing pleasure is my Outlaw posse 'The Dayo' gang.

Seven men full of bad intentions
And here is where they will probably end up in the campaign!

The cool thing is, with the exception of two kits bought from 4Ground at Salute, I had all the terrain and random bits I needed to speed build my rail head town, 'Lago'.

Below are the first of the 'fine' townsfolk of Lago, or are they a  town with something to hide?

Could all be revealed during the campaign?

All the figures to the rear are Reaper efforts and with the exception of 'Big Bess' the barmaid, all the miniatures were originally painted up for other projects.

'Boot Hill' is a piece of terrain I am particularly pleased with as it is completely scratch built.

Here is how it looked before it was painted up.

The 'Mayor' and 'Deputy' are Black Scorpion 'Tombstone' miniatures.

The 'building under construction' is a 4Ground effort and I really like it as it is built on split levels so you can use it as two single story buildings.

The 'hitching posts' are also 4ground efforts.

Lago even has a log cabin on it's outskirts.

And now for my posse.

All the miniatures are Black Scorpion 'Tombstone' efforts and are a mixture of their 'Outlaw' and Tombstone civilians sets that I picked up last week at Salute.

As I wanted them done within the week these were only painted to a basic table top level for speed. It is testiment to the quality of the sculpts that they look as good as they do considering they are just ink washed and edge highlighted.

The leader of my Outlaws 'The Duke' outside his abode on the edge of town.

Lago is a town of the grow. . . . . . . But at what cost?

Here another business is under construction in Lago, overseen by the Mayor and 'Big Bill' the owner of the local Saloon.

Is it me or are they looking a bit shifty?

I had more then enough Terrain to get Lago started and if you look carefully in the background you can see my brothers Law men, block coloured and hopefully finished by next weekend.

I ordered a TT scenics town set at Salute but that has yet to turn up. I have been assured by TT that it is being dispatched tomorrow so hopefully they will arrive soon and be painted up for thegame next week.

I would love to add the cliched bits like water tower, church, corral etc but with 'Blood in the Bad Lands' campaign kicking off for our summer offensive, time will now be very limited.

Hopefully my Outlaws shold get their first runout next week against 2Key's posse of Law dogs.

Now the numbers
Miniatures painted / sold this year = 126

Miniatures bought 45
373 miniatures to go!

Pleased the unpainted total did not rise too rapidly post Salute ;0)

In other news my computer had it's first 'blue screen of death' which is as bad as it sounds so I might be going dark for a while after this if my computer completely gives up the ghost. Fingers crossed it hangs on for a bit longer!

So I think I have finally gone bonkers!!

So last week I found myself painting a real rock to make it look MORE like a rock!!!

Even as I was painting it I was having a monolouge with myself about how mental it was so I can't be completely gone.

BUT is it just me or does it just look better?

Unfortunately there is no way I can add this to my painting total for the year. . . .can I?

By the way this is not my post Salute Ta - DAAAAAA!

Odds and sods

Just a small collection of bits finished so far this year.

First up an MDF laser cut effort I bought on eBay.

Just a quick spray of Army painter sprays while it was still in bits and then just stuck it together once it dried.

Very happy with the result considering how little time it took.

Next up is an Iron gut.

Not too much time spent on this one as he is a 'third ranker'.

i.e. you will never see him and he will be the first fella removed from the unit!

SEE!!!!

Now the numbers

Miniatures painted / sold this year = 8

Miniatures bought 15 due to new Mordheim campaign and Riotville live!

468 miniatures to go!

I have had a real look at the grey shame this year and truth is there are HUNDREDS of miniatures in there which will never see the light of day so I plan to have a big couple of months selling so I can excuse getting some companies for IHMN.

Happy new year and cleaning house.

First post of the year is a couple of terrain bits I finished up over the Christmas break.

First one is the WHF card building I picked up cheap.

I feel the proper roof tiles and extra building bits really add to the building.

Overall very pleased with how it turned out.

The other piece is a lazer cut effort I picked up for £6 (including p&p) from eBay.

It looks a bit like a Christmas decoration but took the paint well and is perfect for a bit of cheap terrain filler.

I also picked up a inn type thing and that is currently in the garden drying out so we will see how that looks.

And here is the two together.

Some of you may have noticed the new Blog Banner?

I am running a 1850 point WHF (8th edition) bring and battle day on the 5th of February at the Redhouse Beefeater in Ilford.

It is £5 for the whole day and that includes the free drinks that can be won!

There is also a 100 pts Regiments of Renown campaign which is run as a side campaign. The ROR battles will have a minor influence on the main battles.

More then happy to lend out figures for a ROR warband for anyone who is interested but does not have and miniatures.

Any producers miniatures are welcome and the forces do have to be assembled BUT not painted. The house rule is painted miniatures will have hatred towards unpainted miniatures!

There will be more information in a later blog post but for now muster your forces and keep the 5th of Feb free.

Warhammer Fantasy House, card model kit WIP

I have the poops today so had to have the day off work.

The toilets are too far away from my class room to risk it ;0).

With some down time I delved into my cupboard of grey shame and dug this out of the pile . . . . .

Picked it up on eBay a couple off weeks ago for less then £6 and now seemed like the perfect opportunity to crack it open.

Did not like the look of the card strips that come with the original kit so peeled them off and stuck on some tiles I had from an old 'Del Prado' 'make your own medieval thingy kit'.

I also delved into a pile of building bits I have been winning cheap on eBay with some cheeky bids and decided to add some to the mix.

Personally I think it looks miles better and the added weight gives it more purchase to the table.

Hopefully I will find some time to give the tiles a quick dry brush before a planned game of Mordheim on Friday to finish it off.

Not sure if I should go with red tiles or bluey / grey slate tiles?

Garden of Morr.

Internet has been out for the last week. Finally back on line so just a quick one as a sign of life.

Painted up some bits from the Garden of Morr set my brother got me for my birthday.

Used the paint scheme suggested by Rob Hawkings.

I also added red roofs to add some colour and added some brass fittings to add some variety.

Zealots and scratch builds

Actually had some hobby time this weekend which is the first time in what feels like bloody ages.

I did want to finish some thing in one sitting so pulled out this Heresy (I think) miniature from my brothers lead pile. This is a candidate for a future Witch hunter warband.

It is a simply lovely sculpt and was a pleasure to paint.

It was so nice I did not even feel the need to paint eyes on the figure and thats saying something for me!

That is a nice thing to say as my brother seems to have a knack of finding minitures which are absolute pigs to paint. Even when he finds a good sculpt (like his Scibor stuff) he asks for outrageously difficult paint jobs!!

This time I did not even bother to ask him what he wanted and just gave the figure a brown primer and then went from there.

Personally I think the brown / Menoth white combo is a winner!

In other news I also painted up a scratch build I made earlier in the year.

Made completely from scratch.

The stone effect is via some textured wall paper I found for cheap in a hardware store that was going out of business.

The tiles are made from cereal packaging I spent FAR too long cutting up and glueing on!

The ironwork on the corners is just more cereal card with pins pushed into it the make the rivets.

The window leading is made from the things you put between tiles when grouting.

The chimney is just some card tubing that happened to fit inside another piece of card tubing.

The wood details are from a set of doll house stuff I picked up super cheap at a toy auction.

Looks half decent (considering it cost me pennys to make) once it got a coat of paint.

I will probably add some tuffs of grass to the back and side to break up the stone work and might print out some Mordheim themed posters to stick on the sides but for now I am calling it done.

I was feeling really pleased with myself until I put it up against a miniature and realised I had made it far too big!

To try to counter this I placed some 28mm scale barrels etc on it to hopefully make it look more appropriate if it is seen in the background of photos.

Trouble is I made two of these at the same time so the other house is probably just as oversized as this one.

Hopefully I can just hide them on the outskirts of the board behind other buildings.

Now the numbers

Miniatures painted / sold this year = 170 (silver tower does not count)

Target 100

Miniatures bought 30 (damn you BOYL!!)
I had time to have a proper recount and wished I never bothered!

483 miniatures to go!

140 in the black this year
